WE GET LETTERS

10/20/00

Dear Joan,

Your recent delivery of Halloween costumes and decorations were spectacular!

The staff and children are thrilled with the electric pumpkins, various decorations for classes and school and beautiful costumes. Our celebration will be great.

Thank you and all NYARM members for all you do for our children.

Sincerely,

Joanne Goldkrand, Principal

Brooklyn Blue Feather Elementary School

To the Editor:

Perhaps Mr. Elbaz did as well as he could in the short space allotted to his Manager's Corner for October. However, I find these things relating to heating systems misleading:

  • A recital of the HPD rules on heating. NYC residents by and large are chilly at 68º F. Recommend 72º F as a minimum daytime indoor temperature.
  • Re: (domestic) hot water: Should mention that the minimum temperature must be 120º F and that any higher temperature wastes energy and endangers children and seniors with scalding.
  • Mr. Elbaz might have mentioned that, if all building systems are working properly, there should be little use of pagers and other emergency measures to contact building staff. In fact, the state of maintenance in NYC multifamily buildings is atrocious, and most of those mechanics to be called are poorly trained or their employers lack incentive to do good jobs.

Dear Donna,

The giant heart of NYARM and its members is in evidence again.

A while back I informed you of my involvement as Production Coordinator of "Walk F.A.R. for NAAR"; the first Walkathon ever held in this area to raise funds for autism research. The Walk was organized by the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR) to benefit many like my son Michael (now age 6) who was diagnosed as autistic at 2_ years of age.

You graciously invited me to attend a monthly meeting to ask for support from NYARM and its members. When a business responsibility prevented me from attending, you took it upon yourself to inform the membership about the Walkathon and "passed the hat." The NYARM Board also joined in and took a sponsorship as well. On Walk day, NYARM members including Joan Saberito, Nelson (Santa) Davis, Rochelle Captan, Chuck Holden, Tom Maniuszko, George Brady and others came and walked along with my wife Barbara and other family and friends as part of "Team Michael." NYARM and its members contributed approximately $2500 to NAAR, helping to make the Walk incredibly successful; attracting almost 4000 people and raising over half a million dollars!

Thanks again to you, the NYARM Board and all the members who gave so generously of their time and money in support of all the families affected by this terrible disability. With the support of you and others, we will continue this event every year until we get the answers, treatments and eventually the cure that our children deserve.

I'm proud to call you colleagues and friends.

Sincerely,

Mitchell Hammer
